[–>

“We have continued to follow all leads, but to date, there has not been an arrest,” the sheriff’s office said. “We are seeking the public’s help in passing on any information they may have, no matter how insignificant it may seem.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 803-436-2004, CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC, or submit a tip online.

Collins, a West Virginia native, served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 20 years and retired as a Major, according to his obituary.

“He was an avid boater, collector, and woodworker,” the obituary said. “He loved music and played both the accordion and trumpet. Steve was a longtime member of Shaw Heights Baptist Church where he served for many years as a deacon.”

Both a funeral service, in Sumter, and burial, in West Virginia, were held in July 2022, according to the obituary.
