1 dead, more than 20 injured as high winds collapse music festival stage

At least one person was killed and more than 20 others injured when strong gusts of wind caused parts of a stage to collapse at a music festival in Spain, officials said.

Three of the injured were in serious condition on Saturday, a Valencia government official said.

An “unexpected and violent storm” swept through the grounds of the Medusa festival in Cullera, Spain around 4 a.m. local time on Saturday, organizers said in a statement.

When the weather deteriorated, organizers ordered the evacuation of the area around the stage, they said, adding, “Unfortunately, the devastating meteorological phenomenon caused some structures to trigger unexpected events.”

Local media reported that a 28-year-old man had died.

“The management of Medusa Festival would like to express our deep and sincere condolences to the family and friends affected by last night’s fatal consequences,” the organizers said in a statement.
