A 16-month-old boy died from a gunshot wound in an Indiana apartment

A 16-month-old child died of a gunshot wound Tuesday in a northwest Indiana apartment, authorities said, but investigators provided few details.

Isaiah Johnson was killed in the shooting, Tippecanoe County Coroner Kerry Costello said. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday to determine the boy’s cause and manner of death.

NBC affiliate WTHR of Indianapolis reported The boy was fatally shot by his 5-year-old brother, police said Tuesday.

NBC News was unable to immediately reach a spokesperson for the police department Wednesday morning.

The shooting at the Romney Meadows apartment complex in Lafayette was reported around 3 p.m., Lafayette police Lt. Matt Gard said.

Gard said the child was not breathing, there was no call from the person in the apartment at the time of the shooting, and no first aid was administered at the scene.

“There was one adult and two children in the apartment,” Gard said. All three were interviewed by investigators.

No arrests have been made, Gard said.
