QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — A strong earthquake struck Ecuador on Saturday, but there were no reports of major damage or injuries.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 in the coastal Guayas region of the country. It was located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Guayaquil, Ecuador’s second largest city.
Videos circulating on social media show people gathering in the streets of Guayaquil and surrounding communities. People reported objects falling into their homes in Guayaquil, a sprawling urban area of more than 3 million people about 170 miles (270 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Quito.
The earthquake was also felt in northern Peru.
